A little-known but quite odd rule of the Pro Football Hall of Fame was thrust to the forefront last week, after Kendra Stabler Moyes, the daughter of Ken Stabler, shared on Twitter that she and her family did not receive either of the traditional tangible gifts given to those enshrined in the Hall, the gold jacket or ring.
Many people around the NFL spoke out, including current Oakland Raiders coach Jack Del Rio asking the Hall to honor Stabler’s family with those gifts, and Sporting News’ Alex Marvez reported that Raiders owner Mark Davis quietly tried to prevent the disagreement and convince the Hall of Fame to present Stabler’s family with the ring and jacket.
Stabler waited years to be voted into the Hall, and died of colon cancer a couple of months before the induction ceremony.
Despite the public outcry, the Hall of Fame won’t change its mind. On Tuesday afternoon, it sent a statement to media members outlining its policy for posthumous inductees, saying that the museum’s board of trustees evaluated the policy in June and decided not to change it. It also explains that families of posthumous inductees do receive a small token.
